It's NOT the law: Spider legs are in...

It's a Myth...

Many people think clumpy lashes are the sign of a bad mascara. Whilst that may be true if the look is intentional it can actually work.

To make the most of the look prep your lids with an eye primer or nude, matt shadow to absorb any natural oils that can increase smudging.

The clumpy spider look shouldn't be too overcurled - your lashes should be as straight as possible to imitate spider legs.

Use a water resistant mascara that can be easily built on and apply both to the top and bottom of your top and bottom lashes. The idea is to build up as much volume as possible to create that 'clumpy' look. To complete the style move the mascara wand horizonttally back and forth along your lashes.

For a last minute touch use a lash brush to gently fan out the ends of your lashes to create a wide eyed look.

Take your lashes into space with Maybelline rocket volume mascara

It has been billed as the mascara with rocket volume but does it live up to the claims?

•8x volume super fast
•No clumps

Maybellines new Rocket Volume Express comes sealed in a packet so you can guarantee no one has sneakily tested it. The tube is a indigo colour which reveals a chunky but small brush when opened.

Surprisingly the volume transferred onto my lashes quickly and I went from flat to defined in a few seconds.

Both my top and bottom lashes were left fuller and longer although I would debate as to the 8x increased volume.

The only real complaint I have is that the brush felt slightly scratchy on my eyelashes when applying.

There was virtually no clumping either which makes for a mascara that lives up to virtually all of its claims.

Maybelline Rocket Volume earns itself a score of 4.5/5

Before

After

Advantages
•The volume could be seen within seconds
•Lashes were left clearly defined and volumised
•No clumping

Disadvantages
•Slight scraping feeling when applying
•I wouldn't say there was 8x volume as claimed on the packaging

Don't believe that beauty myth: You can pop your spots

There are a few beauty laws we should all abide to and one of those age old rules was never pop a pimple. Who came up with that one and who has ever actually listened?

Contrary to popular belief it's actually okay to pop a pimple as long as you follow a few simple rules.

  • Choose your spots carefully. You should only attempt to burst 'ripe' spots which have a white head on. If it's an angry red bump step away you could end up scarring your skin.
  • Wash your face and fingers, and wipe your spot with alcohol. It may sting a little but this is the best way to cleanse the area
  • Puncture the spot by passing a sterile needle through the very top. If the pus doesn't come it it wasn't ready to be popped.
  • Carefully apply pressure to the side of the spot, ensuring you never push down on the pimple as this could cause it to collapse inwards leaving your skin inflamed.
  • Wipe the area again with alcohol then apply a benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid based treatment like Dr Nick Lowe Spot gel £9.18.
  • Finally leave the area alone! Don't apply makeup as it needs time to heal.

Rimmel Lash Accelerator Endless review

It's been a while since Rimmel last launched a mascara, so clearly a lot has gone into the thought and planning of their new launch.

Here's a sneak peek of the ne w Rimmel Lash Accelerator Endless with grow lash complex and fibre enhanced mascara.

I was very impressed with the increased length of my lashes and how defined that they seemed. However there was a small amount of clumping which may be visible on the after photo. I'll give it 4/5

Advantages
  • Brand new formula with grow lash complex and fibre enhancer
  • Really enhances lashes
  • Long brush so lashes can be covered in one sweep
  • Excellent price for a brush with a formula that would normally cost a lot more in a designer brand
Disadvantages
  • Slight amount of clumping

Welcome to the beauty sphere: How to reduce adult acne

As part of my competition to win a Lancome Hypnose gift set I asked you what your beauty concerns were. The major one seemed to be spots, a major part of growing up and sadly part of many adult womens lives.

I researched into this problem and created a video which I hope will help a little bit in resolving adult acne.
Please let me know what you think and would like to see more of!

The beauty items you'll want in your makeup bag due to hit the shelves in 2013!

As the new year finally roars into action it's time to examine what exciting products will be hitting the beauty shelves.

In March Macs collaboration with Archie comics brings out a unique colour collection celebrating the iconic characters Betty and Veronica. The launch will kick off San Diego's comic con with a special event that includes the attendance of famed Archie Comics artists and illustrator, Dan Parents. The range is rumoured to include eyeshadow, lip glosses, lipsticks and mascaras.

April brings Max Factors launch of Giant Pen Sticks, a big fat crayon for your lips that make a real statement.

As a person with dark circles I'm always looking for the perfect mascara and the news of Benefit's new product UpFake is music to my ears. The product which will launch in April is destined to be the best on the market that can conceal even the most obvious flaw. Unfortunately there are no pictures as there have been none released yet!

Nail Art is still a big thing on the beauty scene and Revlon will be hitting that market in July with thier Nail Art duos. There will be three collections to choose from including neons to make the colour really pop, moon candy and expressions.

Primark winter/spring spree

On my way back from a failed attempt at getting a weekly railcard (I was too early) I strolled into primark for a browse.

£79 later this is what I bought!

White blouse with tie detail £6.00

White blouse with pearl and heart detail £12.00

Leopard print top with bows £8.00

White tshirt with lace and polka dot bow detail £10.00

White dress with lace shoulders and belt £15.00

See through white top with lace and flower detailing £8.00

Ring necklace £1.50, cross necklace £1.50

Black diamanté headband £3.00

White flower headband £2.00

Pink flower necklace £4.00

As you can see there's quite a white theme going on which makes me think that's one of the hot colours for spring. The new jewellery items are dainty and very floral (minus the cross) and will go perfectly with my new tops !

Avon Irresistibly sexy put to the test

As a Avon lady I have the advantage of seeing a Avon catalogue every month and finding all the latest beauty products available.

The new mascara Irresistibly Sexy was on offer as a new promotion and looked perfect with the aim of adding volume to lashes through its unique fibre enhanced under-wire brush.

Having never seen a underwired mascara before I wasn't sure what to expect and didn't think it'd look much different to normal.

The mascara comes in a very cute pink tube with a simple label of Irresistibly Sexy. Inside was the unique brush they had mentioned in the catalogue. Whilst a normal mascara brush tends to be just one straight line this was twisted in a spiral shape.

Applying the mascara with the unique underwired brush meant it was a lot easier to get into the corners of my eyes and apply it to the little lashes that normally get missed. I can't really say it added much more volume then a traditional mascara did but it didn't clump and my lashes looked defined and with 2x increase on my natural lashes.

With a price of £8.50 this mascara fits in with the region of most high street brands. It is made unique through its underwired brush which really helps get into the corners of your eyes and apply to the little lashes but it doesn't give quite as much volume as it claims.

I'll give it a 4/5 for it's original factor

Advantages
  • Fibre enhanced
  • Unique underwired brush
  • Easy to get into the corners of your eyes and apply to the smaller lashes
  • Non clump formula
  • Defines lashes
  • Adds 2x volume
Disadvantages
  • Like most mascaras there result wasn't as dramatic as the claim of 4x increased volume

John Frieda Luxurious Volume Blow Dry Lotion review

Following on from my recent review of a new John Frieda product I was lucky enough to be selected to test their new Luxurious Volume root booster spray.

The product comes in a turquoise bottle with a spray nozzle. I don't think it's intended to be as premium a product as the precious review.

With a promise of transforming fine, flat hair into salon caliber natural looking volume, I expected a lot of this product.

I sprayed into my roots both on top and under and blow dried my hair upside down for the maximum effect.

Like with John Frieda's other volumising product I felt the uplift was minimal and not what I expected.

Weighing it up I would say the product is okay if you want a small amount of volume, but you'll have to stick to back combing for a major effect.

I'll give it 3/5

Before

After

Advantages
•Small amount of increased volume
•Easy to use

Disadvantages
•You don't get as much volume in your hair as you would expect to get

We all love a bit of volume so when I was selected to test John Frieda's new luxurious volume spray I was pretty excited.

The suitably named blow out spray is designed for fine hair and aims to turn your hair from fine to full.

There is a styling hint tip on the back and instructions as to how you can achieve a more volumised look.

The product is a medium sized light green bottle with a simple label to the box and more instructions. Perfect if you don't keep your boxes.

I sprayed the product all over my roots top and bottom, front to back. Then to achieve more volume I blow dried my hair upside down.

The end result I felt wasn't as good as I was expecting. There was a bit of uplift but not much on the root area which is what the product was designed for. View the pictures and decide for yourself whether my hair has more volume.

I'd give it 2/5

Before

After

Advantages
•Great new product soon to hit the shelves
•Comes with styling tip and instructions
•Small uplift

Disadvantages
•Any uplift soon disappeared
•Didn't feel my hair achieved the volumised look it should have

Soap and Glory high definition thick and fast collagen mascara review

When I spotted Soap and Glorys High Definition Thick and Fast Collagen mascara I was instantly intrigued.

Following a film analogy the mascara which comes in a shade of film noir aims to aid high definition to your lashes.

You see a lot of products on the market that include collagen in the ingredients, but often they provide little or no added results.

Soap and Glory Collagen mascara comes in a attractive gold package with big bold lettering that instantly draws attention.

Inside is a gold wand with a average sized brush. The mascara brush on really easily and didnt scratch my eyelids like some mascaras can do.

I found the mascara did define my lashes quite well but there was a element of slight clumping. Perhaps this was Soap and Glory's way of adding extra definition?

Overall a reasonable mascara but I did feel the collagen didn't have much of an effect.

I give it a score of 3/5

Before

After

Advantages
•Attractive packaging
•Does define your lashes
•Bottom lashes seem more lengthened

Disadvantages
•Doesn't seem like the collagen has any real effect
•There is a slight clumping to the lashes
